PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — “It’s a mess. It’s just a pigsty here,” Gabriel Suchta said as he walked into the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, seeing two trash bills overflowing with trash. “A lot of the same stuff was there this morning and that was eight hours ago and it hasn’t been picked up yet.”
Some trash bins are overflowing at the airport, and shops and restaurants are sitting in the dark before security checkpoints. “The last few months have gotten progressively worse,” Suchta said.
After security, where more places are open, there is a different problem. “The lines are absolutely crazy,” Chyna White said. “We were at Starbucks and they only have one person taking orders and one person serving. It was packed and full of people. There were so many people getting frustrated and I feel like people were annoyed because they weren’t getting stuff fast enough.”
This is happening because there are not enough people to work and keep businesses open. Now the airport is working to fix that problem by holding a job fair on Tuesday, Nov. 16. “We are hoping to fill 225 positions,” Heather Shelbrack, a spokeswoman with Sky Harbor International Airport, said.
Shelbrack said some stores had to close or limit their hours because of the pandemic. The hiring event could help open some doors back up. “Our travelers and employees will benefit as well with longer hours open,” Shelbrack said.
Rasheedah White is the co-owner of Lolo’s Chicken and Waffles at Terminal 4. She said her restaurant has been closed since March of 2020. The airport is in charge of hiring for her business but she is scared they won’t be able to recover. “We have never been through what we have experienced,” Rasheedah White said. “It’s a big loss in revenue. But White is hopeful more people will want to work around the holidays.
Flagship Facility Services is one employer looking to hire at the event. The company’s recruiter said it’s possible. “We can get potential candidates hiring and working in three working days,” Christine Cochran with Flagship Facility Services said.
The hiring event will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. It will be located at the 44th Street PHX Sky Train Station located on 44th Street and Washington Street. There will be more than 20 companies looking to hire. You will need to bring your driver’s license and you are encouraged to bring a resume. For more information, click/tap here.
