PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A Phoenix nonprofit is helping make sure grandparents raising their grandchildren have a merry Christmas.

Duet holds gift giveaway for grandparents raising grandkids

A Valley nonprofit handed out gifts to families.

Duet held a drive-through holiday present giveaway for dozens of Phoenix-area families Monday. In Arizona, 60,000 grandparents are raising their grandchildren. With many on a fixed income, events like this can help.

“We want to have them to celebrate. We want them to have toys under the tree. These kids are just going to be surprised by the amount of gifts they got this year,” said Patricia Dominguez, the director of kinship care services at Duet. “We were able to provide a good amount of goodies and games, so they are going to have a wonderful Christmas.”

Arizona’s Family talked to one woman named Julie, who is raising her three great-grandchildren. She said Monday’s event means the world to her.

“It’s a blessing. I’m grateful to give some kind of Christmas to these kids. Right now, the Christmas tree is a little bare,” she said. “This right here is helping me a whole lot because it’s only me raising the kids. It’s my own income [for] these three kids and the little bit the state gives me. This really helps me out a lot,” Julie said.

Each kid got an item off their wishlist. Even the grandparents got a present — Walmart or Fry’s gift card worth at least $75.

“I just truly appreciate what Duet has done. This is just a blessing,” said another grandma named Jodie.

She said while it’s different raising a child as a grandparent, she’s happy to do it.

“When the judge said, ‘Do you want?’ I said, ‘Sure,'” said Jodie.

Julie agrees.

“I wouldn’t want it any other way; I’m so happy they’re with me. They’re happy. They’re loved. They’ve got a lot of support,” Julie said.
