Half a million refugees flee Russian invasion

More than half a million people have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded on Thursday, but the European Union’s crisis management commissioner says the figure could reach seven million. 

With men of conscription age prevented from leaving Ukraine, mostly women and children are arriving at the border in eastern Poland, Slovakia and Hungary and in northern and northeastern Romania.

It comes as the EU prepares to grant Ukrainians who flee the war the right to stay and work in the bloc for up to three years.
