CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying Qatar 2022: TV, schedule, results, standings for South American Eliminatorias

By the time the two rounds of November matches are complete, there will only be four left to play in South American qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The first tickets to Qatar could even be booked by next week.

Brazil (1st, 31 points) and Argentina (2nd, 25 points) are cruising in those top two places, and there’s a scenario which would see them clinch if there are at least six teams that are 13 or more points away. The Argentina vs. Brazil match on Nov. 16 will be must-watch.

The scrap for the other berths awarded to 3rd through 5th place (5th place earns a spot in a playoff) will be intense with some fascinating head-to-head matchups in November. While Colombia (4th, 16 points) and Uruguay (5th, 16 points) have their work cut out for them to take points off Brazil and Argentina, respectively, Ecuador (3rd, 17 points) will be expected to cement its third-place spot against last-place Venezuela.

The four teams behind that group will do battle to see which country can still keep dreaming of a World Cup berth. Paraguay (8th, 12 points) has a must-win at home against Chile (6th, 13 points), while the faint hopes of Peru (9th, 11 points) could be all but extinguished without a home win against Bolivia (7th, 12 points).

How CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying works

It’s not complicated in South America. All 10 nations play in a round-robin format with each country playing the other nine teams at home and away (total of 18 matches). It’s three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for every loss.

After 18 matches, the top four teams in the standings qualify directly to Qatar 2022, while the fifth-place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff with a ticket to Qatar on the line.
