Sir Alex Younger, the previous head of MI6, has mentioned that peace talks can be “very difficult” to attain in Ukraine if Vladimir Putin succeeds in his navy goals within the east of the nation.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Sir Alex mentioned: “Putin doesn’t have a reverse gear, he by no means has. He underestimated the size of what he was taking up, however he has now modified his strategy, arguably now his goals are extra lifelike and he isn’t going to surrender.

“I think it’s key for all of us to understand the long-term and intractable nature of the conflict that’s taking place, and that is a tragedy for the Ukrainian people”.

When requested what would occur if Russia begin successful in japanese Ukraine, Sir Alex mentioned: “It’s clear that that’s the Russian plan. They search to basically seize the Donbas, set up a land-bridge to Crimea, earlier than any honest engagement in a peace dialog. That is clearly the plan.

“It is clearly in our pursuits to make sure he isn’t able to enter any political dialogue from a place of power, and I believe any progress the Ukrainian forces make in slowing him down or ideally stopping him can be constructive information for us.

“If he does succeed militarily in the terms he has set out, there will then be a very difficult peace conversation, and I doubt that either the Ukrainian government or Western powers would be able to come to any form of sensible agreement with him”.
